The sodhana chikitsa (Elimination of Doshas) is otherwise called as panchakarma Chikitsa. Pancha means five and karma means process.
There are 5 processes. They are
1. Nasya Karma (Errihine Therapy)
2. Vamana Karma (Emesis Therapy)
3. Virechana Karma (Purgation)
4. Sneha Vasthi (oil enema) (smoothening enema)
5. Kashaya VasThi (Decoction enema) (Cleaning enema)
In serve aggravation of doshas, these processes are performed. Proper application of Panchakarma eliminates the aggravated doshas completely and thus gives cure to the body.
Never do Panchakarma directly to the patient. Before doing Panchakarma, we have to prepare the patient for it.
1. Poorvakarma (Pre-operative procedure)
2. Pradhana karma (operative procedure) and
3. Paschat karma (Post operative veprocedure) is the three phases in Panchakarma Therapy.
POORVAKARMA
It is the preparatory stage of Panchakarma. Oleation (Snehana) and sudation (Swedana) are the main procedures involved in this stage. Without proper oleation and sudation, panchakarma may be fruitless.
Oleation
Oleation provide lubrication to the body. Oleation is of external and internal. External oleation is achieved by oil massage, dhara, pizhichil etc. By doing oleation aggravated vatha within the body can be controlled and the body became softened.
Snehana drugs given internally are two types.
They are Achapana and Vicharana
Achapana- Medicated oil or ghee alone is administered in to the body through mouth and gradually increase the dose to the optimum and thus saturation point is achieved.
Vicharana- In this type of internal oleation process, medicated ghee or oil mixed with food is given to the patient. Those who are intolerant to the administration of oil or ghee alone, is oleated by this method.
Sudation (Swedana)- Swedana is the act of sweating applied to whole body or any part of body. According to Charaka, there are 13 kinds of Sweda Karma. They are Sankara Sweda, Prasthara Sweda, Avagaha Sweda Jentaka Sweda, Asma Ghana, Sweda, Karshu Sweda, Kuti Sweda, Bhoo Sweda, Kumbhika Sweda, Koopa Sweda and Holaka Sweda.
Swedana Karma detach the aggravated doshas from the dhathus which are softened by the oleation process and finally the aggravated doshas are led to the Koshta (main channel of the body).
Massages, Pizhichil, dhara, Sirovasthi, Njavarakizhi (Rice pudding massage) are certain forms of sudation

NASYA (Errhine treatment)
It is a process by which drug is administered through the nostrils
Nasya is of two types.
They are Marsa nasya and Prathi marsa Nasya.
Marsa nasya is applicable in case of various diseases such as cervical spondylitis, Head ache, Facial palsy, Hemiplegia, Diseases of nose, Frozen shoulder, Sinusitis, Mental disorders etc.
