Nikah Siam describes a way for Malaysian Muslim couples to get married in Southern Thailand, in the province of Songkhla, and obtain all required documents for registration of the nikah when they return to Malaysia. Many couples think that obtaining the nikah certificate is enough. But it is not sufficient just to obtain the nikah certificate. For nikah in Siam, Malaysian couples need also to get a letter from the Islamic Religious Council in the province where the nikah ceremony is performed. This letter is addressed to the Malaysian Consulate in Songkhla. With this letter, the Malaysian Consulate will then issue a letter to the Pejabat Agama Islam in Malaysia, confirming the marriage. This document from the Consulate is to be submitted to the Jabatan Agama when applying for registration of nikah in Malaysia. Only by marrying in Songkhla can the above documents be obtained on the same day. If marriage takes place in other southern Thai provinces such as Yala or Narathiwat, the letter from the Malaysian Consulate in Songkhla cannot be issued on the same day because of the long distance and long travel time from these provinces to Songkhla.
